RE: computers

Not everyone can afford the data storm system nor do they have room for the equipment

RE: computers

I was using Millenicom Wireless Broadband until today. When I first got the service it took about a dozen calls to Tech Support to get it up and running. Last month they increased their charges to $60 a month. Since then I have been having nothing but problems. Dropped connections and slow downloads, slower than dial-up. Past few days have not been able to get the modem to work. Mailed and had direct contact with their support techs who feel that the problem is with the Franklin Modem. They still have to submit their problems to the main headquarters in Oregon who have to contact Sprint, who will then reply to Oregon then cack to Tech Support in Georgia. Even though I'm less than 50 foot from the WiFi antenna at the RV Resort, my connection is VERY LOW but still better than no connection at all.

RE: What does everyone do during normal days?

Been retired 8 years. Got bored first 8 months and went out and got a job where I was able to set my own hours. Also took up racing 1/4 scale RC cars before moving down to Florida. Recently took up flying RC Helicopters to keep eye/hand and brain(?) coordination working. Now I got to get a larger heli since these old eyes are having a hard time seeing the Heli more than 50 feet away. Golf is too much like work even though I reside at a RV & Golf Resort. Might take up alligator hunting next year just to pass a few evening hours away.

RE: Wireless Broadband Internet for Full Time Worker

I was using Millenicom Wireless Broadband for internet until today. Since Milliencom raised their rates last month, my connections have been getting slower and slower, plus getting dropped connections. Found out that Milleincom tech sends all problems to their main HQ in Oregon who then sends it to Sprint. Sprint will respond when they feel like responding. NOT a way to keep customers or get new customers.

RE: What does everyone do during normal days?

If you get a dog that sheds, make sure that the dog also goes crazy when it hears thunder. Not to hide but begging to go out for a walk. Especially when you have to go out in heavy rain, lightening, thunder and wind. OK, so I have a wacky dog who paws the air, snorts, coughs, barks and stares you down until you get up and take her out. Walk maybe 100 feet, sits down, stares at the sky and waits until she hears the 3-4 clap of thunder then gets up and SLOWLY makes her way back to the tailer. The nastier the weather, the slower she walks, smelling every danged blade of grass on the way back. If you are really, really lucky, you can even get to stand outside during a hurricane ducking the flying tree branches and roof shingles.

RE: What is important when looking for a campground?

Try Not being 20+ miles away from the nearest store, gas station or bank. That is unless you are just weekending it and carry a weeks supply plus of your needs. One other very important consideration is cell phone coverage. If you can get a good reading on your phone before registering that is helpful. I'm in a fringe area for t-mobile and can only use my phone if I am outside the trailer. Same goes for internet access. Fishing access is also important. Next year I will find a place with fishing access, the closer the better.

RE: Slide in or not to slide in

All flat concrete pad. A few branches but if they hit anything it would be the roof. Have to talk to maintenance to see if they could cut the branches anyway. Do not care for some critters coming off the tree. Would have to undo and move the PC and printer. Thanks for the replies!

Slide in or not to slide in

I am thinking of moving my fiver about 6-8 foot further on the concrete pad at the RV Resort to have the whole awning over the patio. Is it advisable to move it that short distance with the slide out?

RE: Feeling safe camping in a fifth wheel

DSect? The police are only 5 min away? You must park close to a Dunkin Donuts;) I always keep Jr, a .45 with laser light on my bedstand. That is IF, someone should get past my dog. She may not bark, right away that is. Only after she gets hold of the family jewels. I also have the latest target that I shoot with the "X" shot out, hanging so if someone should look in the door, that is the first thing they see. Not paranoid. Just cautious and I do not worry about the boogieman or vampires since I like fresh garlic on my food.

RE: Anyone attempt a water filter install?

Has anyone tried to install a water softener unit in their RV for hard water areas? Have a ceramic filter on the faucet and then run into a pitcher with another filter but have to clean the pitcher top tank out every other week due to the hard water. Filters replaced once a month.

RE: Alltel/Verizon merger

Both were way before my time. Seems that both sayings are the moto's of cell phone companies. With t-Mobile I have to step outside of my 5'ver to make or receive calls. Can't even get 1 bar inside most of the time. I'm about mid way between Gainesville and Ocala, FL. Anyone know of a Really reliable service??

RE: Uh - Slip Sliding Away????

A friend told me that with PPA, you only pay 50% at membership places. I'm trying to tell him that the 50% discount does not apply to someone who plans to stay in the same RV Resort for 3-12 months but for the traveler. Just got started in a 5ver and will be staying in one location for a year in order to get my books in order and see what the gas prices do. After the first year, then I will decide on going full time traveling or not. For me right now, $3500 a year plus $0.11 cent a Kwh is a lot cheaper than $12,000+ a year for rent then elect, utilities and the rest associated with the S&B. As far as joining any of the discount clubs, I do not feel I can justify the expense.

RE: Alltel/Verizon merger

Don't know about the others but I have T-Mobile and it sucks! Never had so many dropped calls with Verizon, Spring or Nextel combined as I have with T-Mobile. Five drops in less than 1 minute while I type this. Talked to one of their tech yesterday and complained. Told them that if this kind of service presists, I'll cancel them and get another provider. Was told that even though my contract is up in November, I will be charged $200 early termination fee, even if I drop it one day in advance of the end of the contract. Cell phone companies do not care about their customers as there is as W. C. Fields always said, "There is a sucker born every minute".

RE: Ants? bug bombs don't affect them, suggestions?

Have tried Terro yesterday for the sweet eating ants both inside and outside of my 5ver. They took to it like a baby to a nipple. Only problem is that after it rained last night, they are back. As a pet owner I have to be cautious of what I use and where I place it. Just spayed dialuted 70/30 water/Clorox outside, so I will have to wait until the morning to see how, if it works. My 5ver is on a concrete pad with expantion joints. The ants move from one joint to the next. Might possibly have to soak the heck out of the joints to see if that works. Has anyone tried Listerine? Have been told that that also works.

RE: Holding Tank Primer for Dummies

Don't remember which posting I read but some RV'ers say to leave the Gray water tanks valve open. WRONG! Might just be the RV park I'm in but I did that for two days recently and that was a BIG mistake. Last night I put some Calgon in all the drains and left overnight. Well this morning I went to get some water for coffee and found a visitor in a glass half filled with water. A NICE BIG Dead WaterBug. Even though it was dead, I might now have to worry about visitors on the floor when getting out of bed in the middle of the night Without, having to turn on a light. Feel that the open drains allowed the bug access to the tanks. I've used clorox before but never found any visitors so I think it was the Calgon that did it in. Looks like I'll have to load up with Calgon when I go to the local WM and Meijer's today and dump a full cup down each drain and a full bottle in the black water tank followed by a few gallons of clean water before heading back to Florida tomorrow. For you Canadians, try looking for the Calgon on the top shelf in the water softener section in your local WM. Since it is not a major brand, they only have a small spot for it. I spent close to 10 minutes at my local yesterday looking before I found two bottles on the very top shelf near the back.

RE: Your Rig

One more question, if you have a big semi like that do you have to get a CDL or anything? What semi??? The red vehicle in front of my 5er is a MH. As such, it does not require a CDL for itself in its state of registry. It only requires the operator license that any TV would need to pull the weight it is towing. Also, if the operator's license class is appropriate in the vehicle's registered state, it's appropriate everywhere else in the country. Garth I looked at an 03 F-550 in Indiana the other day and was told buy the sales manager that they could not sell unless I had a CDL even though it would be to tow my 5ver.

RE: To all 5ver drivers, a ? 4 U.

Have an 06 Chevy 2500HD Vortec 8.1 gasser and SRW, just broke 11,000 miles on odometer after 1 1/2 years. Made my first tow of my 93 Nomad 30 ft from north central Florida to the Cincinnati, OH area a few weeks ago. Got between 7 and 9.5 MPG, depending on with or without Ethanol in the gas. Truck towed with no trouble on the hills in TN and KY, but had thought of looking for something more powerful and more room. Checked a Chevy/Ford dealer in Indiana that had an 03 Ford FL-550 in the lot. Dealer asking $54K with 23,000 miles. Salesman was ready to get an estimate on my truck when the sales manager asked if I had a CDL. Said there is no financing unless potential owner has a CDL. How is the FL-550 on fuel and size of tank and why would a CDL be needed? Just me and my old 4 legged dog.

RE: Grey water disposal revisited

They even put it in water to feed edible fish: Just ruined some friends meal of Talipia by sending them this. One of them said that when a blowhard friend of one family member comes over for their 4th of July picnic, they will make it a point of serving him his favorite food, Talipia, then show him the article. They are hoping that the freeloader and his freeloading grown children will leave early so the rest can enjoy the holiday.

RE: internet service

I've been using Meliencom Broadband Wireless for the past 6 months and have no problems with service except in the RV park in FL where everyone gets p poor connections with all different services. Price just went up to $60 a month unlimited usage. Now I just have to find a phone service that has good coverage. T-Mobile sucks on coverage in NJ, IN and Florida

RE: Inverter

I bought a 400W XPower digital power inverter from Camperworld that can either be hard wired or plugged into a cigarette lighter and can accommodate 2 plugs for about $70. Used it a few weeks ago on a trip from FL to Indiana then to NJ and back to Indiana to power my laptop and charge my cell phone. Works great as far as I can tell. Had tried one of the models that sit in a cup holder but it did not work.
